In Recognition Of National Vietnam War Veterans Day

vietnam war veterans day

March 29th marks National Vietnam War Veterans Day, commemorating the service and sacrifice of the members of the US Armed Forces who bravely fought during one of America’s longest wars. Signed into law in 2017, this day serves as part of a national effort to recognize the men and women who were denied a proper welcome home more than 45 years ago.

Remembering Vietnam Vets

On March 29th, 1973, the last combat troops were withdrawn from Vietnam. The remaining prisoners of war held in North Vietnam also arrived in America. To honor the date, President Nixon chose March 29th, 1974 as the first National Vietnam Veterans Day. Decades later, in 2017, the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act was signed into law. This act designated March 29th of each year as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

Virtual Events

This is the second year in a row that events commemorating National Vietnam Veterans Day will be largely virtual due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Here are a few of the ways vets will be able to stay connected and participate in the day's events.

On VA Channels

The VA will be providing opportunities for Veterans, families, friends, and the general public to see Vietnam memorial walls in 2021 with the release of traveling wall schedules. Learn more here.

You can also read the VA Secretary Denis McDonough’s message here.

The VA will also release videos on their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund will be hosting an online commemoration at 1:00 p.m. on March 29th. There will be a live webcast that can be viewed here or on Facebook here.

Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pins

The Vietnam Veteran Lapel Pin is a lasting memento of the Nation’s thanks for those who served during the war. Veterans on active duty in the US Armed Forces at any time from November 1st, 1955 to May 15th, 1975, regardless of location, are eligible to receive a lapel pin.

Veterans normally receive these lapel pins during public ceremonies. However, given the current pandemic, eligible veterans can receive a lapel pin via mail.
